Once there was a little girl with a stinging heart,
Swearing she would never let the world tear it apart.
“I’ll hate them forever,” she clenched through her tears,
“I showed them my heart, they laughed at my fears.”
Dressed in an apron, face kissed with powder,
Mommy just stood there as she added the flour.
” Some like it sweet, some like it sour,
Some people think that bitterness is power.”
Mommy continued as she whipped up the batter,
Casually adding her thoughts to the matter.
“But what about this? This thing that I bake,
You know what it is. A Clementine Cake.”
I add an orange peel, it’s bitter to the taste,
The smallest dose can lay my entire cake to waste.
Hatred, animosity, these bitter rinds we gnaw,
Protective? Perhaps. But it’ll keep us withdrawn.”
“And now comes the sugar, the world’s sweetest jewel,
But adding just a pinch would make me a fool.
Each tiny crystal is like a fleeting trace of love,
Only once they’re all amassed will their sweetness rise above.”
“Your cake is yours alone to make, just keep in mind one thing,
When people eat the cake you’ve made, what feelings will it bring?
Bitterness will protect you, but your cake will make them gag,
Love takes time to grow and show, but elates those smiles that sag.”
